International Center for Islam and Pluralism (ICIP) soft launching. The event held at ICIP’s office in South Jakarta and attended by numerous colleagues and partners. In the event, ICIP’s Executive Director Dr. Syafi’i Anwar addressed a speech on the establishment of the institution. Also giving the welcoming remark was The Asia Foundation (TAF) Representative Dr. Douglas Ramage and H. E. Surin Pitsuwan as the Secretary General of ASEAN and Prof. Dr. Azyumardi Azra as ICIP’s International Board Member. In this event, numerous guests among them were ambassadors, diplomats, academics, activists and journalists, were enthusiasts and strongly support the establishment of the institution in order to promote Indonesian Islam to the global society that offered different insight and perspective on democracy, human rights, gender and multiculturalism both in normative and practice levels where Islam and local traditions had embellished harmonious relations.

Series of regular meetings and discussions present numerous prominent activists, leaders, and academics addressing issues on democracy, human rights, gender and other contemporary topics.

‘Genealogies of Islamic Radicalism in the Post Soeharto Era’ presented by Prof. Martin van Bruinessen.

The regular discussion took place in ICIP office and attended by numerous of ICIP’s colleague from various CSO and NGO, academics and journalists. The discussion took place on September 9 and attended by 32 participants. The event was also covered by the media.

‘International Linkages of Terrorism’ presented by Dr. Farish Noor and Dr. Hidayat Nur Wahid.

The regular discussion took place in ICIP office and attended by numerous of ICIP’s colleague from various CSO and NGO, academics and journalists. Dr. Farish Noor was a Fellow at Institut Kajian Malaysia dan Antar Bangsa (IKMAS) Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Malaysia and Dr. Hidayat Nur Wahid, an academic-turn to politician, was the Head of Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS). The event took place at ICIP’s office on September 17 and attended by 30 participants as well as covered by the media.

‘Jemaah Islamiyah’ presented by Sydney Jones and Dr. Moeslim Abdurrachman. Sydney Jones, the Director of International Crisis Group (ICG) Jakarta and Dr. Moeslim Abdurrachman the Executive Director of the Ma’arif Institute shared their views on Jema’ah Islamiyah in particular of the current situation on the arresting of ‘Muslim activists’ by the authority. The event was held on Friday October 17 and attended by 39 participants from various backgrounds and occupation. The discussion was well covered by the media such as Kompas, Koran Tempo, Media Indonesia and other print and electronic mass media.

The Prospect of Islamic Parties in the 2004 Indonesian General Election’ presented by Dr. Greg Fealy and Dr. Bachtiar Effendi.

The event was organized on December 11 at ICIP’s office Jakarta. Dr. Greg Fealy, Fellow at the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies (RSPAS) Australian National University (ANU) Canberra and the discussant was Dr. Bachtiar Effendi, lecturer at the Post Graduate Program Islamic State University Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. The discussion was attended by 36 participants and covered by the media.

ICIP participation in seminars and conferences

ICIP Executive Director, Dr. Syafii Anwar participated in the Digital Video Conference (DVC) with three members of President Bush’s Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy for the Arab and Muslim World at the Hilton Hotel Jakarta on September 25.

ICIP Executive Director joined international seminar and presented a paper on Islamic radicalism in Taipei Taiwan on October 8 – 9.

ICIP Deputy Director had awarded as an East-West Fellow at the University of Hawaii for a month in November. He also had a chance to travel for Paris France to observe the dispute on secularization and hijab (veil) in the country.
