Activities
ICIP's activities are centered on four major sub-themes:

  1. The search for and dissemination of, authoritative Muslim texts supporting pluralism, tolerance, human rights, and democracy;

  2. The promotion of gender equality and women's political participation within Islamic discourse;

  3. Support for Muslim NGOs, activists and intellectuals engaged in efforts to promote justice, democratic participation, and religious tolerance within the Muslim world; and

  4. Critical exploration of the relationship and interchange of thought between the Muslim world and the "West".

Activities which are currently being undertaken include:

(a) Translation and Publication of cutting-edge reinterpretive works found only in Indonesian into English and their distribution regionally through cooperation with regional publishers; Translations of important works of international thinkers into the Indonesian language and their distributions nation-wide through cooperative agreements with national publishers; the publication of scholarship produced by fellows-in-residence at ICIP, adding to the pool of progressive thought available world-wide;

(b) Visiting Scholar: high-profile international progressive Muslim thinkers visit ICIP for one or two week periods, conducting public lectures and seminars not only in Jakarta but in several major cities, and having intensive working sessions with their counterparts in Indonesia;

(c) Visiting Fellowship: highly regarded Muslim scholars from Southeast and South Asia are invited to stay for two or three month tenures at ICIP. They offer a series of public lecture at ICIP, teach a class at the State Islamic University (UIN), and are given time to think and write reflectively;

(d) Activist pursuits: Activists and intellectuals from Muslim NGOs in Southeast/South Asia are given the opportunity to visit other Muslim NGOs in SEA/SA for a period of 2 to 4 weeks, in order to learn about alternative approaches to similar problems and issues;

(e) Website:

  • Articles and speeches of progressive Muslim thinkers will be downloadable;
  • Updates on pro-democracy work among Muslim NGOs in the region will be publicized;
  • A discussion list will provide a forum for intense exchange of ideas on issues faced by Muslim activists and scholars;

(f) Training and information sesions on Multiculturalism with members of the pesantren (Islamic boarding school) community.

(g) International Seminars on Islam, pluralism and the phenomenon of radical Islam in Indonesia.

(h) A program on Open, Distance and e-Learning for Islamic Transformation through Pesantren. This program seeks to provide 8 pesantren in Java with access to internet, equivalent education packages, life skills and education in humanism. This program is supported by the Ford Foundation, Jakarta for a three year period from 2007-2010.
