"Gus Dur as defender of pluralism, religious freedom" Print
Jakarta Post, Riverside CA, Wed 6 Jan 2010, Opinion

University of California lecturer Muhammad Ali reflects on Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid's political philosophy in relation to Islam and pluralism. He points out that Gus Dur was a firm believer that truths could be reached through free and open dialogue. In relation to the Indonesianization of Islam, Ali quotes Gus Dur thus: 'The source of Islam is revelation, which bears its own norms. Due to its normative character, it tends to be permanent. Culture, on the other hand, is a creation of human beings and therefore develops in accordance with social changes. This, however, does not prevent the manifestation of religious life in the form of culture'.
