Mohammad Iqbal Ahnaf argues that the moderate character of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organisations, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, is by no means a given. He suggests that, without new policies to strengthen the economic situation of mainstream Muslims, sharia may increasingly be seen less as a threat to state ideology and national integrity, and more as a necessary means for rescuing the economic fate of the underprivileged.
